Petrova meets Groenefeld at Family Circle Cup

28th April 2006

Nadia Petrova of Russia defeated Catalina Castano to advance to the semifinal of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston. Second seed Petrova took the victory in straight sets 6-2 and 6-0. The Russian is looking for her third WTA Tour title this year. Last week Petrova won at Amelia Island after she won in Doha last month. Petrova will meet Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany who defeated Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in two sets, 6-3 and 7-6 (4).

Colombian Castano reached the quarterfinal, being the only unseeded player left, but didn’t stand a chance to Petrova, and lost in little over an hour Petrova will move up from No. 7 to No. 5 if she is going to reach Sunday’s final.

Anna-Lena Groenefeld thinks her match against Petrova can become a close match. “We have played a few matches before and they were all pretty close. We’ve always had good matches, so I think that will be very interesting,” said Groenefeld.

The German had to put 12 double faults behind her before taking the match against the fourth seed Kuznetsova.

“I went for a little bit too much sometimes, because I didn’t want her to be on top of me,” the German said.

Groenefeld is looking to close the gap between her and her doubles partner Petrova, who leads the head-to-head 1-3.
