Anastasia Myskina destroys Sania Mirza

30th May 2006

Indian super-star Sania Mirza did not have such a super day when Myskina beat her quite easily 6-4 6-1 in less than an hour of play in the first round of Roland Garros.

Nastya who went out last year in the opener, got broken already in the first game but quickly recovered by winning the next two games. The set went with serve till 5-4 before Nastya managed to break Mirza to take the set 6-4 after half an hour.

Mirza hit too many unforced errors and not enough winners to become a dangerous opponent for Nastya who on the other side came up with 4 aces, 21 winners and ´only´ 25 unforced errors. Despite another early break, Nastya stayed focused throughout the rest of the match and sailed to victory by converting her first match point by hitting a backhand winner. After her win Nastya had a huge smile on her face which shows that this first win after her win in 2004 means a lot for the Russian.

Sitting in the players´ box was Larissa Savchenko-Neiland, the Fed Cup´s assistant coach who has been travelling with Nastya for the whole clay season now and also attending was Jens Gerlach. Yes, the German is back from wherever he was and hopefully our personal fave journalist Matt Cronin can help a-m.com trying to figure out what the deal was in the last couple of weeks.

In round two Nastya meets Melinda Czink from Hungary. Czink beat Sandra Kloesel in three sets. The match will be played on Thursday. Nastya is playing doubles again this year. She teams up with Elena Likhovtseva which is a surprise since they usually don´t play Slam doubles together. In the first round they meet Yulia Beygelzimer (UKR)/ Eva Birnerova (CZE). Check back for the schedules!

Martina Hingis Cruised Past Lisa Raymond in Opener

30th May 2006

After a four-year absence from Roland Garros, Martina Hingis made her successful return by beating Lisa Raymond, in just fifty-four minutes, 6-2, 6 -2. With the win, Hingis extends her career head-to-head wins against Raymond Lisa Raymond to 7-1.

A very relaxed Hingis cruised to a 3-0 lead over Raymond just eight minutes into the first set of the match. Raymond then showed a superb service game, winning the fourth game, to narrow down the score at 3-1. Eager to win the match quickly, Hingis held her serve, and won the next game. However, Raymond showed some resistance when she started moving Hingis around the court while holding her serve to win the sixth game, with Hingis still leading, 4-2. Hingis then went on to win the first set by holding her serve and converting a break point, taking the first set in just twenty minutes.

In the second set, Hingis won the first game, while Raymond won the second game. Raymond then tried breaking Hingis’ serve by showing some great moves, only to be repelled by Hingis who responded well with good volleys. At 3-1, Hingis committed some errors, which helped Raymond break Hingis’ serve at 3-2. Hingis went on to win the last three games, converting the second match point to seal the match, 6-2, 6-2.

Hingis faces next Zuzana Ondraskova, who beat Julia Schruff in the other first round matches.

Successful start for Patty Schnyder at Roland Garros

29th May 2006

Successful start for Patty Schnyder in Roland GarrosWith an easy 6-1 6-2 win over Michaella Krajicek, Patty Schnyder reached the second round at the French Open in Roland Garros. The Swiss needed only 57 minutes to beat the 17-year-old player from the Netherlands.

In the first match of the day on the court, Philippe Chatrier, the seventh seeded Swiss, started optimal into the match. She broke Krajicek to a 2-0 lead and won the first set in just 28 minutes. The second set began similar to the first with an early break for the Swiss, who dominated in all aspects. With her strong serve, and her tricky game, the Swiss was definitely too strong for the young Dutchwoman. Patty hit 9 aces, 28 winners and made only 2 double faults.

In her second round match on Wednesday, the Swiss will face Jarmila Gajdosova. The number 100 ranked Slovakian in the first round beat the local player Stephanie Cohen-Aloro in three sets. Patty never met her so far.

Kim Clijsters through to the second round

29th May 2006

World number 2 and second seed Kim Clijsters goes through to the second round of the French Open tournament. She played Virginie Razzano and took the first with real ease 6-0 , Virginie Razzano started to play well in the second set forcing Kim Clijsters to a tie breaker that was won by Kim with 7-4.

Clijsters holds good memories of Roland Garros being a runner up in 2001 and 2004.

“At the beginning I was allowed to step in but in the second set she started to play aggressive tennis and I was making too many unforced errors,” said Clijsters.

Razzano overcame a rocky start losing 6-0 in only just 22 minutes but then reinvented herself in the second set forcing it to a tie breaker. She did not prevail and Clijsters won it 7-4.

Sharapova survives scare and hits out at French Open organisers

29th May 2006

Fourth seed Maria Sharapova has managed to reach the second round at Roland Garros despite an aggravated right ankle injury.

Sharapova’s start was a good one, and she soon took the set with 6-2 and took the lead in the second set with a break, but then Mashona Washington started to play miraculously and won that second set 7-5.

In the third set Washington soon took the lead, and at 5-2 she had a match point, which she was unable to cash in. Sharapova began fighting for all she was worth, and that worked, she survived two more match points and eventually took the match, winning the third set and taking the match 6-2, 5-7,7-5.

Sharapova, however, accused the French Open of acting in their own best interests by having her play on Sunday to boost ticket sales and denying her a reschedule due to an injury sustained during her practice last week.

“I put in the request Thursday, and after the MRI (on Friday), I called them and I asked them if I could play later,” Sharapova said in her post-match interview.

“The answer was, ‘you’re playing Sunday fourth match’.

“It doesn’t make you feel great when you know that the French Federation, all they’re thinking about is selling tickets, making money and about their players. I can’t be too happy about that.”

“I was calling British Airways in the third set,” joked Sharapova.

“(From 5-2) I just blocked it (the pain) out somehow and started moving better, making her hit an extra ball. She got a little bit tight at 5-all, and then I served it out, and hit a few good shots, and there’s the match.”

“But, I didn’t play today to sell tickets or make the French Federation happy, I’m here to hold that trophy, and I’m going to do everything that’s possible to win, if I can.”

“If I feel like my ankle is not great, and I have to stop, I have to stop. I’m 19 years old. I’m gonna play these slams for many more years.”

Although many expected her to pull out due to the injuries she has been having in favor of Wimbledon, she said the following, “it’s a tough decision because Wimbledon is probably, not probably, it is more important than this one.”

“Every tournament that I play, I want to win. It’s just that Wimbledon means a lot more to me than any other tournament.”

Not only was this match a real thriller, it also had a productive side, as Sharapova said she wanted to make some investments after two pigeons flew on the court when Washington had her first match point.

“They’re my best friends,” Maria Sharapova said. “I’m actually thinking of buying a few in my house.”
