Mauresmo reached third round in Berlin

11th May 2006

Amélie Mauresmo today beat Russia’s Vera Dushevina, 6-1, 6-2, and advanced to the third round at the Qatar Telecom German Open in Berlin.

After a first round bye in her first clay tournament this season, the French showed a solid performance and won the match well deserved in just 59 minutes.Mauresmo served strong and broke her young Russian opponent four times during the match.

“On the whole, I’m pretty satisfied with my performance”, Mauresmo said after the match.” It’s just the start of the clay court season for me, so I didn’t expect to produce my best tennis ever here in Berlin. I just expected to deliver a solid match, and that was what I did. There were many good scenes in the match, but I can still improve on a few things, but I think it was a good start to the tournament.”

In the fourth round on Thursday Mauresmo will face another young Russian player, the 19-year-old Anna Chakvetadze, who today beat Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues in straight sets. The French number one will meet her for the first time.
