Martina Hingis Cruised Past Lisa Raymond in Opener

30th May 2006

After a four-year absence from Roland Garros, Martina Hingis made her successful return by beating Lisa Raymond, in just fifty-four minutes, 6-2, 6 -2. With the win, Hingis extends her career head-to-head wins against Raymond Lisa Raymond to 7-1.

A very relaxed Hingis cruised to a 3-0 lead over Raymond just eight minutes into the first set of the match. Raymond then showed a superb service game, winning the fourth game, to narrow down the score at 3-1. Eager to win the match quickly, Hingis held her serve, and won the next game. However, Raymond showed some resistance when she started moving Hingis around the court while holding her serve to win the sixth game, with Hingis still leading, 4-2. Hingis then went on to win the first set by holding her serve and converting a break point, taking the first set in just twenty minutes.

In the second set, Hingis won the first game, while Raymond won the second game. Raymond then tried breaking Hingis’ serve by showing some great moves, only to be repelled by Hingis who responded well with good volleys. At 3-1, Hingis committed some errors, which helped Raymond break Hingis’ serve at 3-2. Hingis went on to win the last three games, converting the second match point to seal the match, 6-2, 6-2.

Hingis faces next Zuzana Ondraskova, who beat Julia Schruff in the other first round matches.
