Serena Williams Powers Into The Semi-finals

Serena Williams advanced into the semi-final round of the JP Morgan Chase Open after recovering from a set down against Meghann Shaugnessy in two hours and thirty nine minutes, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. WIlliams now leads Shaughnessy in career head-to-head wins at 2-1.

Though Shaughnessy won the first set through a tiebreaker, Williams never lost her composture. Using powerful groundstrokes and often coming to the net, Williams went on to win the second set, breaking Shaughnessy’s serve three times to level the match and go into a third deciding set, 6-1. In the third set, both held their serves until Williams broke Shaughnessy’s serve in the eighth game. At 5-3, Williams was serving for the match, only to be broken by Shaughnessy, narrowing Williams’ lead to 5-4.Williams went on to win the third set, and the match when Shaughnessy double-faulted at match point.

“It’s awesome to be in the semi-finals. I’m really feeling good about it. I feel like I’m climbing up. It’s cool. I have new goals now,” a beaming Williams said.

Williams will be up against Serbian Jelena Jankovic. Williams and Jankovic are tied at 1-1 in career head-to-head wins.
