Amélie Mauresmo today beat Russia’s Vera Dushevina, 6-1, 6-2, and advanced to the third round at the Qatar Telecom German Open in Berlin.
After a first round bye in her first clay tournament this season, the French showed a solid performance and won the match well deserved in just 59 minutes.Mauresmo served strong and broke her young Russian opponent four times during the match.
“On the whole, I’m pretty satisfied with my performance”, Mauresmo said after the match.” It’s just the start of the clay court season for me, so I didn’t expect to produce my best tennis ever here in Berlin. I just expected to deliver a solid match, and that was what I did. There were many good scenes in the match, but I can still improve on a few things, but I think it was a good start to the tournament.”
In the fourth round on Thursday Mauresmo will face another young Russian player, the 19-year-old Anna Chakvetadze, who today beat Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues in straight sets. The French number one will meet her for the first time.

Elena Dementieva secured a third-round spot on Wednesday after Julia Vakulenko retired while trailing 2:6 and 0:3.
Next opponent for the Russian will be former world number one Martina Hingis, who routinely dispatched Germany’s own, Julia Schruff by 6:4 and 6:3.In the head-to-head series, Dementieva leads the Swiss Miss by 3-2, having claimed the last three matches, including a 6:2, 6:0 route in the Tokyo’s Pan Pacific Open final. After Hingis retired in late 2002, Elena was the last player to have beaten her, and at that time, the series between the two became tied at two matches apiece.
“I have nothing to lose. I only won two games, but you have to believe in yourself,” Hingis stated after being asked about the upcoming match versus Dementieva.
Should Elena advance, she is likely to meet world number one Amelie Mauresmo, who stormed to a 6:1, 6:2 victory over another Russian, this time Vera Duschevina.
The Qatar Telecom German Open has a total of $1,340,000 to be earned by the players including the doubles event.

Martina Hingis set up a third-round meeting with fourth seeded Elena Dementieva in the second round of the Qatar Telecom German Open after she defeated German Julia Schruff, 6-4,6-3, in just fifty-seven minutes. Schruff, who upset Elena Dementieva in the first round of the Australian Open earlier this year, drew first blood when she took the first two games of the first set, and in the process, broke Hingis before holding her own serve to lead the scoreboard at 2-0.
Meanwhile, Hingis won the next three games in a row to lead the scoreboard into her[I don’t know what this means] at 3-2. Schruff then leveled the score by holding her serve. Sensing a possible come from behind by Schruff, Hingis went farther in the match when she won the next two games to lead the scores at 5-3. Julia persisted on, winning the next game, and was a game down at 5-4. The first set of the match ended with Hingis breaking Schruff in the end to win the first set of the match at 6-4, in just twenty-eight minutes and twenty-one seconds.
During the second set, the first four games were split between Hingis and Schruff at 2-2 all. A hard-hitting Schruff broke Hingis’ serve in the fifth game to lead the scoreboard at 3-2. Not to be outdone, though, Hingis won the next four games buy holding her serve twice and breaking Schruff’s serve twice to win the second set, 6-3, and the match.
The next round offers Martina a chance to avenge the crushing defeat she got from Elena Dementieva during the final round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Japan earlier this year.
